Mentoring Student Innovation : 5 Lessons from Motorized Toddler Mobility Trainer

As a mentor, it is easy to measure a student project by the final product—a working robot, a competition win, or an award.

Mentoring Team TeraBridges through the Motorized Toddler Mobility Trainer (TMT) reminded me that the real success is what students learn along the way.

1. Let Students Own the Problem

Ask “What do you think?” and “How could you test it?” Let students develop the confidence to find their own solutions.

2. Let Failure Become Part of the Process

The TMT went through challenges, redesigns, and failed attempts. Every failure gave the students information to make the next version better.

3. Start With the Person

The TMT became meaningful when students focused not only on what they could build, but on the child who would use it. Engineering became an exercise in empathy.

4. Support, Don’t Take Over

A mentor’s role is to provide guidance, resources, and encouragement while giving students ownership of the work.

5. The Award Is Not the Outcome

The TMT’s recognition at the Global Innovation Challenge was a proud moment. But the bigger achievement was seeing students become more confident, resilient, and willing to tackle problems they had never solved before.
